Copey’s Butcher Shop opened on September 28th, 1950 on the very same parcel of land in Medway on which it still sits today. At that time, Howard and Marjorie Copenhefer’s shop was located in a white barn, featured a total of six feet of retail meat case, and was closed in the summer due to the lack of refrigeration. Refrigeration was later added in the fall of 1951 and in 1955, a new block building was built, including eighteen feet of retail meat case and a kill floor, where they began butchering their own cattle and hogs for retail, as well as custom butchering for others.
Since 2000, Copey’s has been under the management of daughter Margene “Marte” Struewing, second generation owner. Today, the business consists of over 12,000 square feet of building, including 2,300 square feet of retail sales area, 44 feet of retail meat case, and 500 cubic feet of retail freezer space. The processing and preparation area consists of approximately 5,300 square feet, which houses all of the most modern equipment necessary to ensure the highest quality of meats available in the area. Unlike most area groceries, Copey’s makes their own smoked meat products, including ham, bacon, roast beef, dried beef, smoked sausage, bologna, and various luncheon meats, all in their own modern smokehouse.
In addition to their quality meats, Copey’s is a source of food products for today’s families. Pre-packaged products such as hamburger patties, meatloaf, ham loaf, frozen vegetables, french fries, salads, breads, chips, and condiments are all available for those “on the go”. If there is something you don’t see in the meat case or a special order that you desire, just ask and we’ll be quick to meet your needs. Helping pave the way for the future is Marte’s daughter and third generation owner Missie Janow, head meat cutter Mike Janow, alongside our experienced employees, some who have been with us for over twenty years, who are here to ensure you have a quality experience. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the variety of pies, cakes, brownies, and the “world famous” cinnamon rolls which are all baked fresh in their house bakery. Whether it’s a pound of ground chuck, a deli meat tray, a side of beef, a whole hog, or a freshly baked apple pie, the family owned and operated tradition continues at Copey’s Butcher Shop, your stop for the finest in fresh meat and meat products for over 67 years.
All of us at Copey’s would like to thank all of our loyal customers for allowing us to be of service to you.
